Have you heard of the new trend on social media where people share their Weekly R.E.P.O.R.T.? It’s a streamlined version of the “favorite things” trend going viral on popular platforms like TikTok and Lemon8.

Connect with your followers and give them a look into your world — Share what you’re reading, eating, obsessing over, and more with the viral Weekly R.E.P.O.R.T trend.

I really enjoy the Weekly R.E.P.O.R.T. trend and am even joining in on the fun myself by sharing my weekly highlights on my social media and blog! I have been observing the content created by others for this trend and am impressed by its simplicity, popularity, and effectiveness in enhancing a personal or professional brand’s social media presence.

In this post, I will explain this trend, its essence, the reasons for its success, how you can participate in it, and how it can help you improve your content creation game. Keep reading to learn more!

What is a Weekly R.E.P.O.R.T.?

In case you haven’t already heard about it, the Weekly (or Daily) R.E.P.O.R.T. trend took off on TikTok. User Gooseweek posts them often and is frequently credited as the creator of this trend by others who’ve hopped on it and shared their own versions.

How It Works

For this trend, participating users post photo slideshows to share what they’ve been up to and their experiences from the previous week in six predefined categories. In these REPORTs, creators list their favorite items or activities in each category, often including aesthetically pleasing photos and viral tunes to accompany them. Each image highlights the standouts in each category from their week.

What are the categories?

Just in case you’re wondering, “R.E.P.O.R.T.” is written the way it is for a reason; it’s an acronym. Each letter in the word, report, has a meaning. In this case, the letters stand for Reading, Eating, Playing, Obsessing, Recommending, and Treating.

Since these posts are typically shared as a photo slideshow, the first image is crucial as it sets the tone for the rest of the photos that follow. However, the meat of the posts is contained in the subsequent six images, each corresponding to one of the categories associated with the R.E.P.O.R.T. letters. Learn more about each category below.

  • R — Reading. You share what you’re currently reading and a brief description.
  • E — Eating. You share something you ate that week that you loved and recommend, or you can share an aesthetic photo.
  • P — Playing. This category could be taken literally or loosely; You could share a photo of you physically playing, what music you’re playing, and more.
  • O — Obsessing. This is the most open-ended category, in my opinion. You can share what you’ve been loving or what’s been challenging you throughout the week. I love seeing how creative other people get when sharing what they’re loving or dreading during their week.
  • R — Recommending. This is another open-ended category; You share something in any area you’d recommend to your audience.
  • T — Treating. You share how or what you are treating yourself with. This category encourages creators to intentionally treat themselves after their week, a common self-care practice.

Why It Works

Social media has become an integral part of our daily lives, used by individuals, brands, and businesses to build a community, entertain, educate, and simply have fun. Young, old, and in between, everyone is on social media. Nowadays, it’s almost unbelievable for someone not to have an account or not to be active on some social media sites, regardless of their age group.

As a result, it’s common for people to become influencers who work with brands, intentionally or unintentionally. This Weekly R.E.P.O.R.T. trend maximizes the very nature of social media that we all love and hate, sharing what you are doing or interested in, and allows you to put it on display for your followers in a refreshing way. Previous trends like Derek Sivers’ Now Page Movement have proven that people love this type of content.

To help you learn more about why this trend has become so popular, let’s explore ten solid reasons why it works.

It can make anyone feel like an influencer, even for a day

This trend is the latest iteration of show-and-tell that helps you learn a lot about a creator, whether they have thousands of followers or just a few. In the age of social media, it’s common for people to become influencers who work with brands, intentionally or unintentionally. Being an influencer has its own benefits and challenges. Still, it can be an excellent way to earn passive income online.

It fosters a sense of community

Think about it: you’re more likely to interact with a post if you can relate to or are inspired by the content. Content that viewers can relate to is becoming increasingly popular as it fosters a sense of community and engagement. This trend allows users to connect with like-minded people with common interests they would’ve otherwise overlooked and discover new favorites quickly. The comment sections on these posts become a space for viewers to share their experiences and offer support and advice to one another. These posts are also a bit voyeuristic, providing a mini glimpse into someone’s life. In most cases, creators often encourage others to share their experiences as well. While it’s important to note that excessive social comparison can be detrimental, seeing others’ recommendations can make viewers feel more connected to the creator and foster community.

It maximizes the algorithm

No matter the platform, the algorithm seems to love the Weekly R.E.P.O.R.T. posts because they’re neatly packaged and offer a fresh take on the same type of recommendations that have been popular on social media for years. These posts are meticulously curated and contain unique recommendations that stand out from the plethora of social media content available. The structure of these posts makes them easy to read, and the content is always well-presented.

It encourages us to focus on the positives

In today’s fast-paced world, where life is full of exciting and challenging ups and downs, especially since the COVID-19 outbreak, sharing a R.E.P.O.R.T can be very beneficial. This trend allows individuals to focus on the positive aspects of their lives and provides a welcome distraction from the stressors of their daily routine. As times continue to change with each generation, it’s been proven that Millennials and Gen Z are commonly unable to afford the lifestyle experienced by older generations at the same ages. As a result, they are trying to find happiness in small things and share a slice of their lives with their followers instead of focusing on the things they can’t or haven’t obtained.

It encourages mindfulness throughout the week

With the current attention economy, we often overlook the small things that add joy to our daily lives. However, by intentionally taking the time to reflect on these moments each week, we can gain a greater appreciation for them. This trend encourages us to keep track of our weekly activities and share them with others. Whether it’s a favorite restaurant or a book we’re trying to finish, we can savor these moments and even receive valuable recommendations from others who share our interests, not just from the second R. Remember, the little things often bring the most joy!

It encourages self-care

As a longtime fan of journaling as a self-care ritual, this trend brings me so much joy! With different categories to choose from, the possibilities are endless. These posts are essentially an aesthetic, digital photo diary of everything you’ve been doing and trying lately. It’s truly a remarkable way to preserve memories and express creativity. I think the Weekly R.E.P.O.R.T is a great thing to even incorporate into journaling or just mindful reflection when practicing self-care.

It’s low maintenance and easy to replicate and join in

I love this trend because of how easy it is to join in and how versatile it can be! This trend allows smaller creators to participate and varies so much from week to week. In the past few years, most trends have required dancing, lip-syncing, or advanced editing skills, which can be difficult for beginners just figuring out what content they want to create. However, this format is simple and photo-based, which allows people to make it their own and showcase their creativity.

It brings authenticity back to posting online

This trend reflects the shift towards more genuine and unpolished content. Over the years, the way we post content online has evolved many times. When social media was new and technology was still developing, we shared a lot of unedited content. As time passed, our motivations and the technology we used to create content changed, and we gradually shifted towards creating content that was polished and visually appealing, which often lacked authenticity. This trend, along with many others today, is now taking us back to making more genuine, unedited content that is relatable to people. Personally, I love this move towards authenticity, especially since I lean more towards following creators I’d want to be friends with in real life.

It can be used across platforms

Like most viral trends, this one has garnered significant attention and is spreading like wildfire beyond its original platform of TikTok. Since gaining popularity, many creators have brought the idea to various online platforms such as Lemon8, Instagram, and even personal blogs and websites. I am confident that this trend will become even more popular, and we can expect to see more exciting iterations of it in the future.

It can boost your brand’s content creation efforts

In today’s digital age, staying updated with the latest trends is crucial if you want to create a significant impact as a creator. Your content should not only be engaging and interesting, but it should also be relatable and relevant to your audience’s interests and needs. By keeping yourself ahead of the curve and utilizing new and innovative techniques, you can grab your audience’s attention and create content that resonates with them deeply.

There’s advantages to participating

I enjoy observing the books people read, the foods they’re consuming, and the hobbies they’re taking up. Following the trend and interacting with other people’s content is entertaining. However, there are additional advantages to actively participating in such activities to boost your brand and online presence.

How To Make A Weekly R.E.P.O.R.T.

If you’ve made it this far, you may be thinking about joining in on this trend. As mentioned earlier in this post, the content you create for this trend can be versatile. Now that you have learned about the trend, what it involves, and why it works, let’s dive deeper into some tips on how you can create a viral-worthy “R.E.P.O.R.T.” to share with your audience and boost your brand.

Define your purpose.

Building your brand is crucial, and creating a likable image in the real world and online is essential. You may have heard it before, but if you don’t do it, the story is still being created for you through your actions, how you show up in the world, and your interactions with others. Even seemingly small things, such as defining the purpose of the content you create and share on social media, are critical for developing a personal or business brand to which people will be attracted. It will also determine the strategy you use to share your content. For example, the Weekly R.E.P.O.R.T. trend is an excellent way to expand your presence and influence as a creator. To reach more people with your content, you can use a viral song or sound along with the hashtag #weeklyreport when sharing your content for this trend.

Curate authentic, inspiring, and share-worthy content.

Hopping on this trend is easy! Enjoy your life, and as you go about and reflect on your week, look out for highlights you want to share to showcase your favorite books, meals, music activities, products, and obsessions. Whichever day you decide to share your post and whichever platform you choose to use, follow the R.E.P.O.R.T. format to share what you’ve been Reading, Eating, Playing, Obsessing over, Recommending, and Treating yourself with your audience.

Choose how you want to participate.

Whether you decide to participate in this trend by sharing your post on your social media or website, your audience can experience your weekly R.E.P.O.R.T. in numerous ways. For example, like most of the viral posts already shared, you can make a photo slideshow that viewers can swipe through as they scroll their feeds. Additionally, you can share your content with your audience in a collage that showcases your obsessions, meals, books, and favorite products in one still image, video, or text format. The possibilities are endless — you can post your Weekly R.E.P.O.R.T. for close friends, for yourself as a mini video diary, or just for fun!

You can even think outside the box and create your own version like some of the other creators.

Check out Kailyn Nino‘s version, which she calls the Weekly R.E.C.A.P. In her version, the letters in “R.E.C.A.P” stand for Reading, Eating, Comforted by, Appreciating, and Preoccupied with. Kailyn dropped “REPORT” for “RECAP” to highlight different categories.

Also, check out Iya B.‘s version, which she calls the Status R.E.P.O.R.T. In her version, she dropped “weekly” for “status” which removes the time constraint of doing it every week. This way Iya can choose the schedule for how often she makes her posts.

Final Thoughts…

Many people are now using social media to create more authentic content that romanticizes the mundanity of their daily lives. The viral Weekly R.E.P.O.R.T. trend encourages creators to share more of the little joys in their offline lives rather than just their “best” moments. Participating in this trend can be a simple, fun, lighthearted way to practice self-care and connect with your followers. It’s also a great tool to boost your brand’s content marketing efforts and understand what type of content your followers crave.

Personally, I enjoy reflecting on the week’s events and sharing my thoughts and experiences with my social media followers. I’m excited to keep up with this trend, but I’m even more thrilled to use it to enhance my personal brand.

Although trends come and go, I’m confident that the Weekly R.E.P.O.R.T. trend will continue to evolve and take on new forms long after the trend passes. Just like Derek Sivers’ Now Page Movement, this viral trend can live on and be an excellent content creation tool that you can use to grow your personal brand and online presence as a creator in a fun and engaging way.
